About Me

In this image-driven world where people generally consider thinness as commensurate with beauty, I had always been ordinary in the looks department, or perhaps even less than ordinary because I was not even close to being thin – I was downright fat.

My name is Rachel E. Smith, and this is my story.

Two years ago, by the time I was thirty-two, I could not look back on my life and say that there was a period when I had the ideal weight for my height. I had always carried that extra poundage ever since I could remember. It’s something to be expected, however, since my father has also always been portly (and yes he used to play Santa Claus during our Christmas parties).

You see, the thing is I would not really have known I was different had people not treated me at least a bit differently from others. Because I was fat, people never saw me for who and what I really was. In school, I had always been academically smart. With regards to everyday life, I always give respect to where it’s due and at most times, even to where it’s not. But it’s very rare that people had referred to me as ‘that smart girl’ or ‘that nice lady’. I had always been ‘that fat girl’, ‘that fat woman’ and ‘that fatty’.

When I stepped into high school, I started to feel the beginnings of shame. I could not take looking at myself in the mirror. I considered myself as ugly. During these times while I was secretly suffering, all I did was eat. I was an emotional eater so the situation didn’t help me. I ate ice cream by the gallons and cakes by the boxes. I kept everything to myself and didn’t tell anyone anything about how I truly felt.

I had felt like that for periods at a time over the course of my life. The feelings wane and wax depending on the situation and I also lose and then re-gain (more) weight in intermittent periods. I had tried all kinds of diet programs – no kidding. There was even a time when I had starved myself to the point of unconsciousness. Of course, I had realized afterwards that this method was totally out of the question. Finally, during one of these phases a few years ago, I got tired of the never-ending cycle and decided that I wanted to put an end to my weight problem. I researched like a woman possessed. I had a goal. I was driven. I wanted to lose weight.

Now, at thirty-four, I reached my goal. I had lost a whopping 90 pounds (41 kilos) ever since I started seriously losing weight the healthy way two years ago and never gained a pound of it back. I had become happier and more confident, not because people do not look my way and laugh at me anymore, but because I had managed to take total control of my life. My friends and even the people in my small town who used to laugh behind my back now treat me as a weight-loss guru. Though at first I wanted to take all their past ridicule against them, in the end my good side won.

I had helped a lot of people lose weight in this town (yes, even my father). I am not a professional and had never claimed to be one, but I think all the experiences from my past could make up for all my shortcomings. In the course of all my research, I had learned so much about the methods of losing weight. I want to share them to as many people as I can – not only in my hometown but also to the whole world.

That is why I thought about blogging all knowledge I had gained over the years. In this blog, I will write about health, overall physical fitness and different methods of dieting. I will write reviews about various diet pills and other techniques of losing weight. Most of all, I will share personal life experiences which I hope will be able to teach you valuable lessons. If you are thinking of losing some extra pounds, you don’t have to experience everything first-hand – be smart and learn from what I had gone through before choosing what method you think is right for you.

- Rachel.
