Six-Pack Abs: How to Get Them

Posted on August 21st, 2007 in Health & Fitness by Rachel

Ladies easily swoon over males with great bodies. For the ladies, seeing a well-formed male physique is like seeing a knight in shining armor. You have to admit. The first thing that attracts one person to another is that person’s physical attributes.

Men with well-toned bodies easily get a second and a third glance from the ladies most of the time. On the other hand, a man who has an average body build will get nary a glance from the ladies. Without batting an eyelash, the ladies are sure to come close to a well-chiseled male body.

Steroids – The Wonder Drug that’s Not so Wonderful

For this reason alone, a good majority of the male population would go the extra mile to achieve that popular body of a Mr. Universe, or at least something close to it. Many go for steroids in the hopes of getting that wonderful body as soon as possible. However, one has to realize the untoward effects that steroids has on the body. Sure, it will help you achieve your dream body quickly, but once a body builder stops using it, the muscle turns to fat and instead of looking good your body will start looking really flabby.

There are also some guys who think they look sexy after developing those great, bad-boy muscles through steroids. The sad part is that they don’t have enough height to carry the extra muscle mass that they now have. Thus, instead of looking the macho cowboy, they end up looking like oversized pandas.

Abs Exercises

Nothing beats the traditional way of achieving those wonderfully chiseled abdominal muscles: abdominal exercise. Exercising this particular set of muscles is still the unbeatable way of achieving the desired six-pack abs. The following are the basic rules in developing abs. These are no different from the concept being followed for the biceps and other parts of the body that a man wants to fully develop.

Getting Started

For beginners, one should start with the basic abs exercises in regular and paced intervals. The key here is continuity so that that set of muscles starts getting bigger with each exercise. Over time, the exercises can be intensified so that the abdomen is steadily being stretched to its limit every time. The abdominal muscles will only grow as long as they’re being forced to do so. Simply put, the amount of repetitions should be slowly but steadily increased so that the muscle mass will respond by increasing its size too.

Adding Weights to the Training

After working out with simple sit-ups and crunches, the body starts getting comfortable with this work out so much so that it does not have any more effect on the abdominal muscles. Body builders are known to start using weights while doing crunches. This additional weight on the simple crunches helps the abdominal muscles to start adjusting to this new load. The same principle is also applied with sit-ups, so the man can also start using weights when doing sit ups. A variation to the weighted sit-ups is the incline sit-ups, also with weights.

The important thing to do is to complete the abdominal muscle exercises regularly and make the exercises harder as you progress.
