Unhealthy Fast Food Made Relatively Healthy

Posted on May 20th, 2007 in Health & Fitness, Weight Loss / Diets by Rachel

The time for fast food has come. In this fast paced world, majority of the working denizens find less and less time to cook their own meals. It is much easier to find a fast food joint nearby where they could satisfy their hunger at an affordable price. One doesn’t have to clean up, too, after they have eaten their meals. It is so convenient! Unfortunately, though, it is not altogether healthy.

Strings of Potatoes

Many people just love French fries. It‘s supposed to be healthy because they are made from potatoes, right? They’re made of potatoes but they’re not at all healthy, and that’s the truth of it. They are cooked in oil, which, even if the fries are drained, remain on every delicious bite of it. Add a dollop of mayo on the side and you’ve got one of the least healthy fast food dishes.

Food for Thought for Cheeseburger Lovers

Burgers are a mainstay of fast food establishments. They are the main come-on of fast food joints. The public gets a full meal with each order of this. One has to watch out for those processed cheese and mayo that are usually on top of the patty. The cheeses they put on these burgers are partly made of cooking oil and are thus disastrous to your dieting plans. Enough has been said about mayo. Oh, and bacons too. Bacons are crispy and wonderfully tasty; they’re also really fat.

Buckets of Fried Chicken

Chicken is white meat while pork is red meat. According to nutritionists, white meat is healthier than red meat. This is undoubtedly true, but in fast foods, chicken is not as healthy. They are, after all, cooked in a pot of hot cooking oil.

Eating Healthy Fast Food

While nothing beats home cooked food, you can still try to turn fast food to healthier food. One option is to avoid the cheese and the mayo on the burgers. Add vegetables instead. Go for baked, broiled and steamed whenever such options are offered and reduce eating fried food. Instead of ordering a supersized order of fries, do try a vegetable salad. There are also options in some fast food for baked potatoes. Of course, beware of the butter.

Meat is a protein-rich food, and a healthy alternative is fish. Thus, when in the fast food, you can opt for fish dishes. However, at the risk of repeating myself, don’t choose fried fish fillet sandwiches. You can also try the so-called ‘meatless’ burgers. You may surprise yourself and like it despite your protestations to the contrary. However, again, don’t go for fried ‘meatless’ burger varieties.

Diet soda or water is also healthier than regular sodas, which is also common in fast foods. Juices are also available if a person really craves that flavor in their drinks. But the less sweet it is, the healthier it usually turns out to be.

It takes time to make this shift in food but slowly, it can be achieved. One just needs to focus on the essentials and understand how one’s choice of food can be an enemy or a friend of the human body.

I have found that instead of soft drinks, tea makes a wonderful drink. As long as you don’t put sugar in it.
