Diet Fact and Fiction

Posted on February 23rd, 2007 in Weight Loss / Diets by Rachel

Dieting is a common practice not just with the obese but also with individuals who would like to trim down their frames and feel better about their bodies. If you wish to go on a diet, you have to be able to separate fact from fiction. It is not a matter of losing weight at any cost. Rather, it should be a matter of living a healthier life style that you can sustain and be happy with.

The Secret to Losing Weight

Some people blame specific types of food such as chocolate, sugar, cakes and any such stuff that they may have been eating in huge quantities and at regular intervals. All too easily, they start thinking of striking them off their diets forever, hoping that this will cure them of their growing waistline. Too many times, they fail because they have not fully grasped the essential concepts of dieting.

Basically, the principle behind a diet is eating less of the calories than what the human body actually needs on a day-to-day basis. When this happens, the body’s reaction is to use the stored fat instead so that excess fat is eventually burned away. Dieting will not have to mean goodbye to those sweet stuff. It just means eating them in moderation and not too frequently. This way, you do not deprive yourself and will therefore not be sorely tempted to go back into the habit of gulping down calories after calories from the same food.

Low-Carb, High-Protein Diet?

In recent years, a low-carbohydrate but high-in-protein diet has been advocated to help somebody go down to a lower size. What some people don’t know about this diet is that the body tends to use the carbohydrates stored in the organs such as the muscle and the liver instead of utilizing fat in one’s body. What is lost here is water and not fats. This also has a negative effect on the aforementioned organs.

Besides, foods rich in carbohydrates give the dieter a feeling of fullness or heaviness in the stomach so that they do not feel hungry right away. Nonetheless, as always they should be taken in moderation, according to the desired calorie count.

Water Therapy?

Drinking eight glasses of water is not just good for the body in the sense that it helps move wastes better. Water also fills up the stomach. Some dieters drink water before taking their meals so they are less likely to take in more food than necessary; the stomach is already full with water in this case.

Meal Replacements?

Do not be easily fooled by meal replacements that promise to replace minerals you would usually get from the food you eat. They are fine in short durations but their long-term use is not advisable. Natural calories are needed by the body if it is to function efficiently.

Exercises?

Finally, a good round of exercises is good for the heart and for the entire body. It will certainly help burn those extra pounds off the natural way and keep them off for longer periods of time than just plain dieting. It also helps develop those muscles that can help keep weight down later on.
